Thought Provokers

The Gospel for this Sunday is John 10:11-18. This Thought Provokers may serve as an introduction to the meditation of this Gospel.

A Shepherd’s Job Description:

To draw to Christ those who are alienated;
to lead back those who have been drawn away;
to secure amendment of life in those who fall into sin;
to strengthen weak and sickly Christians;
to preserve Christians who are whole and strong,
and urge them forward in all good.

I genuinely regret that the shepherd is the only democratic calling
that has ever been raised to the level of heroic callings….
So far from objecting to the Ideal Shepherd,
I wish there were an Ideal Postman,
an Ideal Grocer,
and an Ideal Plumber.

G. K. Chesterton, Stories Essays and Poems

At the very heart of the Christian gospel is a cross–
the symbol of suffering and sacrifice,
of hurt and pain and humiliation and rejection.
I want no part of a Christian message that does not call me to involvement,
requires of me no sacrifice,
takes from me no comfort,
requires of me less than the best I have to give.
The duty of a Christian is to be faithful, not popular or successful.

We in the church are making a great mistake
by trying to make Christianity popular and pleasant.
We have taken the cross away
and substituted cushions.

Billy Graham

The great use of a life
is to spend it for something that outlasts it.
