Thought Provokers for next Sunday’s Gospel (John 14:15-21)

When we have met our Lord in the silent intimacy of our prayer,
then we will also meet him in the campo,
in the market,
and in the town square.
But when we have not met him in the center of our own hearts,
we cannot expect to meet him in the busyness of our daily lives.

Christ always lives where there is room for him.
If there is room in your heart for Christ,
he lives there;
if there is room in a law office for Christ,
he lives there;
if there is room on a locomotive engine,
he will be there;
if there is room in a baggage care,
he will be there.

You need not cry very loud;
Christ is nearer to us than we think.

Who is the mysterious spirit that heals us,
that binds us together,
that rebuilds broken families,
that heals the psychotically estranged,
that evokes a tenderness and forgiveness and hope in us?

Who is the Mysterious Spirit
that conceived the delicate wonder of childhood,
the sensuous warmth of mature beauty,
the gnarled gray wisdom of age,
the endless mystery of life and death,
tears and laughter?

In a sense, I do not know,
but I sense his presence,
feel his power
and I have learned to trust his love.

One night I had a dream. I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord and a cross the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonged to me and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life.

This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you. You would walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why in times when I needed you most, you should leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints. It was then that I carried you.”
